Honor Guard

Every veteran has earned final honors. Our detail makes sure they get them.

Requesting honors

The Honor Guard renders military funeral honors for veterans in this community. There is no cost to the family, and the veteran does not need to have been a member of this post.

Most requests reach us through the funeral home, and that is usually the simplest path — tell your funeral director you would like VFW honors and they will contact us. Families are welcome to call directly as well.

Because services are usually arranged within a few days, call rather than write if the service is close. Someone will take the details and get them to the Honor Guard coordinator.

If you would rather send the details in writing, you can fill in a request form. We will still call you back to confirm.

What the detail can provide

Depending on the service and the number of members available, the Honor Guard can provide a flag fold and presentation, a rifle salute, and the sounding of Taps. Tell us what the family would like and we will do everything we can to cover it.

The detail also turns out for Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies, parades, and other community events.

Joining the detail

Any member can join, and no ceremonial experience is needed. Come to a practice and the detail will teach you — plenty of members were handed a rifle on their first day and did fine.

There is a role here whether or not you can stand through a long service, and whether you can make every call or only some of them. Come to a practice, or call the post and ask for the Honor Guard coordinator.
